Overview Google Translate is the machine translation service everyone has used, most people underestimate, and nobody credits for being the closest thing the internet has to a universal language layer. Launched in 2006 on statistical translation and rebuilt in 2016 on the neural network architecture Google's research team introduced with its Neural Machine Translation paper, it now runs across a web app, iOS and Android apps, a Chrome extension, and — through Google Cloud Translation — an API that powers translation inside a large fraction of the sites you visit.
