OpenAI's flagship text-to-video model producing minute-long realistic clips.
Video Generation
Sora is OpenAI's text-to-video model, first unveiled in a February 2024 research preview that reset industry expectations for what AI video could look like. The demo clips — a woman walking through a rainy Tokyo street, a stylized wooly mammoth crossing a plain, a paper airplane flying through a jungle — were the moment generative video moved from "interesting" to "commercially plausible." Sora shipped to consumers via ChatGPT Plus in late 2024, and Sora 2 in 2026 extended the model from 60-second clips to feature-short lengths of up to five minutes.
Positioning-wise, Sora is the raw-fidelity engine. Where Runway wins on the editing surface and Pika on the accessible price, Sora wins on the single question of "how good does the generation look before you touch it." Composition is cinematic. Motion physics are the strongest of any consumer-facing video model. Character consistency across a scene holds better than any competitor. And the fact that it lives inside ChatGPT — the same account as GPT-5, DALL-E, Whisper, and Advanced Voice — makes it the only frontier video model available as a feature of an assistant subscription rather than a standalone product.
The trade is that Sora is a model with a chat wrapper, not a video production tool. There is no Motion Brush. There is no Camera Control with numeric parameters. There is no timeline editor. Iteration is conversational: you describe the shot, review the output, describe the fix, review again. For a solo creator producing social clips or a founder writing marketing copy that needs a hero video, that workflow is often enough. For a working video pro finishing a client deliverable, it is not — Runway or a traditional post workflow still owns that segment.
For the ChatGPT power user, though, Sora is a genuine unlock. You brainstorm an idea in GPT-5, generate a matching image in DALL-E, animate it in Sora, script a voiceover, and export — all inside one thread you were already in.
Sora 2 extended-length generation. The 2026 model extends single-clip generation from 60 seconds to feature-short lengths of up to five minutes. Long clips still require careful prompt planning — the model's coherence over long durations is much better than 2024 Sora but not perfect — but the ceiling is now high enough to produce short-form narratives end-to-end.
Cinematic composition and motion physics. The single most distinctive quality of Sora output. Camera moves feel intentional. Lighting reads as coherent across shots. Physical motion — water, hair, fabric, natural gait — obeys physics with an accuracy that other video models still routinely break. This is the reason Sora clips consistently look "shot" rather than "generated" at first glance.
ChatGPT integration. Sora is embedded in ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Pro. You describe a video in the same thread you write copy in. You iterate conversationally. You can hand the model an image DALL-E just generated as the first frame. You can chain a script from GPT-5 into a generation prompt. No other frontier video model offers this level of workflow integration.
Image-to-video and video-to-video paths. Feed Sora a still image and it animates it, using the image as the first frame. Feed it a source video and it can restyle or extend it. Both paths are stronger in Sora 2 than in the 2024 release, though Runway still has a more precise restyling workflow.
Multi-shot storyboarding. Sora 2 accepts structured storyboard prompts — a sequence of shot descriptions with camera direction and scene setup — and generates a coherent sequence rather than isolated clips. This closes some of the gap with tools that offer explicit camera control by letting you specify the shot in natural language.
1080p and 4K output. Sora produces up to 1080p on standard tiers and 4K on Pro. Frame rates are 24-30fps by default. Aspect ratios cover 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, and cinematic 2.39:1.
Watermarked and unwatermarked exports. Consumer tiers include a small Sora watermark by default. Pro removes it. Enterprise gets full C2PA metadata for provenance workflows.
Guardrails and content moderation. Sora enforces OpenAI's usual content guardrails, and additionally is strict on public figures, brand-adjacent styling, and certain commercial concepts. Uploading a face for image-to-video also runs through moderation.
Sora is not sold standalone. Access is bundled into ChatGPT subscriptions.
| Access Path | Monthly | Sora usage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | $0 | None | No Sora access |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | ~50 priority generations/month | Standard resolution, watermarked |
| ChatGPT Team | $25-$30/seat | Higher caps, team billing | Standard resolution |
| ChatGPT Pro | $200 | Effectively unlimited Sora Pro | 4K, unwatermarked, priority queue |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Custom | Custom | SSO, admin, longer clips |
Plus at $20/month is the tier most casual and semi-serious creators pay. The ~50 priority generations per month is a soft limit — Plus users can generate more, but with lower priority and longer queues. That is enough for a founder or marketer producing a few pieces of video content per week.
Pro at $200/month is where Sora becomes a real production tool. Effectively unlimited generation, 4K output, no watermark, priority queue, and access to Sora Pro's longer-length and higher-fidelity models. This is the tier for creators who genuinely ship generated video daily. If you are not doing that, Pro is not for you.
Team and Enterprise are the paths for organizations. Team at $25-$30/seat gives you standard Sora with team management. Enterprise unlocks the highest tiers with SSO, admin controls, and custom generation policies.
There is currently no dedicated Sora API pricing published for third-party developers; API access is expected to arrive via the OpenAI platform in staged rollouts.
Pros
Cons
Runway. The video production tool of AI video. Motion Brush, Camera Control, restyling, keying, upscaling, and a real editor. Choose Runway when finishing a deliverable matters more than raw generation fidelity. $15-$95/month tiered.
Pika Labs. Consumer-friendly generative video with a lower entry price ($10-$60/month tiered). Strong for stylized short-form work. Behind Sora and Runway on fidelity ceiling but faster and cheaper for social-first output.
Luma Dream Machine. Text-to-video with excellent motion physics and a free tier that beats most paid competitors. Strong hobbyist choice; catching up on editing tooling.

Is Sora free? No dedicated free tier for Sora. Access requires ChatGPT Plus at $20/month or higher.
How long can a single Sora clip be? Standard Sora tops out at 60 seconds; Sora 2 (2026) extends to up to five minutes on Pro and Enterprise tiers. Longer clips require careful prompting for coherence.
Can I use Sora clips commercially? Yes, under OpenAI's terms, with the usual content policy carve-outs. Pro tier removes the watermark; Plus and Team retain a small Sora badge on generations by default.
Does Sora have an API? No public self-serve API in 2026 yet. API access is expected via the OpenAI platform in staged rollouts. For programmatic video generation today, Runway's API is the pragmatic choice.
How does Sora compare to Runway? Sora produces higher raw fidelity on most single generations, especially cinematic composition and motion physics. Runway offers a real editing surface (Motion Brush, Camera Control, video-to-video, keying, timeline editor) that turns raw generations into finished deliverables. Working video pros often use both — Sora for generation, Runway for finishing.
Are there restrictions on what I can generate? Yes. Sora enforces OpenAI's content guardrails and is strict on public figures, brand-adjacent styling, violent or sexual content, and certain commercial concepts. Uploading faces for image-to-video runs through additional moderation.
Sora at $20/month through ChatGPT Plus is the correct default for ChatGPT power users, solo creators, founders, and marketers who want the highest-fidelity generative video available at consumer pricing without leaving the assistant they already use. The raw generation quality is unmatched, the conversational workflow is a real productivity advantage inside the OpenAI ecosystem, and the marginal cost is zero if you were paying for ChatGPT Plus anyway. Working video pros finishing client deliverables should pair Sora with Runway — generate in Sora, finish in Runway — because Sora lacks the editing surface that professional workflows require. Serious daily volume justifies the jump to ChatGPT Pro at $200/month; casual use does not. Skip Sora only if you need programmatic API access (use Runway) or if OpenAI's guardrails block your specific creative direction (use Runway or open-weight video models like Open-Sora).
