Overview Character.AI is a consumer chatbot platform where you talk to AI personas — millions of them, most user created — that pretend to be celebrities, fictional characters, historical figures, tutors, therapists, romantic partners, or completely original personalities their creators dreamed up. Launched in beta in September 2022 by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas — the same pair who co authored the paper that put the "T" in ChatGPT — Character.AI became one of the fastest growing consumer AI products of the ChatGPT era, at one point pulling more mobile session time per user than TikTok. The story since 2024 is more complicated. In August 2024, Google struck a $2.7 billion licensing deal that pulled Shazeer, De Freitas, and most of the research team back to DeepMind, leaving Character.AI as a leaner product focused company operating under a licensing arrangement. Founder in residence Karandeep Anand took over as CEO. Through 2025 and into 2026, the product survived a wave of lawsuits over teen safety, tightened its age gating substantially, and settled into what it always really was: an entertainment and companionship product, not a productivity assistant.
