Overview Duolingo Max is the top tier of Duolingo — the language learning app with the green owl mascot, the 500 million user footprint, and the reputation for being both the most downloaded language app in the world and, by turns, the most mocked. Launched in early 2023 as an AI powered upgrade using GPT 4, Duolingo Max sits above Super Duolingo (the ad free tier) and unlocks two features that changed what an app based language product can honestly claim to do: Roleplay, a conversational partner that lets you practice speaking with a scenario driven AI character, and Explain My Answer, a tutor that walks you through why an answer was wrong instead of just marking it. What Duolingo Max actually does, cleanly stated, is add a conversational and explanatory layer on top of the gamified drill and review app most learners already know. You still complete the same daily lessons, still keep your streak, still watch the mascot judge you when you skip a day. But now, when you get an answer wrong, you can tap Explain My Answer and get a paragraph in your native language walking you through the grammar rule you missed.
