Overview Pi — short for "Personal Intelligence" — is a conversational AI built by Inflection AI, the company founded in 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman (DeepMind co founder), Reid Hoffman, and Karén Simonyan. Launched publicly in May 2023, Pi was a deliberate counter positioning against the productivity first framing of ChatGPT and Claude: an AI you talked to for the conversation itself, tuned for warmth, patience, and emotional intelligence rather than for benchmarks or feature breadth. For a period in 2023 and early 2024, Pi was genuinely one of the more interesting chatbots in the consumer market. The voice mode, in particular, felt years ahead of what OpenAI and Google were shipping at the time. Then in March 2024, Microsoft absorbed most of Inflection's technical team in a $650 million licensing arrangement — Suleyman became CEO of Microsoft AI, Simonyan followed as Chief Scientist, and the majority of Inflection's researchers moved with them. Inflection continued as a much smaller enterprise focused company under new leadership, and Pi the consumer product entered a long tail of maintenance mode. The one line positioning in 2026: Pi is a well designed conversational AI whose parent company got hollowed out by Microsoft — it still works, it is still free, and it is still notably warm and patient, but the frontier has moved on without it.
