Overview Tabnine is the AI code completion tool that got there first — years before GitHub Copilot, years before Cursor, years before "AI in your editor" was a category — and has spent the intervening seven years watching the market it created get eaten by better funded competitors while quietly building the moat that actually matters in 2026: enterprise compliance. Launched in 2019 by an Israeli team as a next token predictor trained on public code, Tabnine spent 2020 2022 as the default "AI autocomplete" tool for developers who wanted it, ceded the developer experience crown to Copilot by 2023, and by 2026 has pivoted hard into being the AI coding tool that legal, security, and compliance teams inside regulated enterprises can actually approve.
