Overview Adobe Firefly is the image generator that exists because Adobe's enterprise customers demanded a version of generative AI they could safely put into a legal review. Launched in beta in March 2023 and integrated into Photoshop, Illustrator, Express, and the broader Creative Cloud stack later that year, Firefly is not trying to win the aesthetic benchmark race with Midjourney or the photorealism race with Flux. It is trying to be the AI image model that a Fortune 500 marketing team can use without their legal department stopping the campaign. In 2026, that positioning is still Firefly's real product, and it is why the tool is embedded in more corporate creative workflows than any other model on the market. What sets Firefly apart is what Adobe calls "commercial safety." The Firefly models are trained on Adobe Stock imagery, openly licensed content, and public domain material — no scraped web images, no copyrighted art in the training set.
